Say ‘Hello’ to our wonderful hard working committee working together to make sure everyone in our school is super active everyday.

Physical Education

This year our whole school focus for PE is dance and we have tried to include it in any activities we have been doing this year. In our school we follow the Move Well, Move Often programme which incorporates many strands from the PE curriculum in each lesson.

We have many resources that we use for our PE lessons and they allow us to partake in different activities. Thanks to the hard work of our Active Schools Committee these resources are a lot more accessible in the shed.

We now have a timetable for each yard for break and lunch assigning specific resources from the sheds for certain times and days throughout the week.

Physical Activity

Our school started the year with an amazing Active experience as we were the flagship school for European sports day. We invited one of the neighbouring schools to take part in this amazing experience with us.

This day was jam packed with amazing experiences and opportunities for all of the children. One of the most exciting aspects of this day was the presence of RTE meaning the children got the opportunity to appear on News2Day telling everyone about their school and how active we are.

We were delighted to have a local Leitrim lady bring in the Mary Quinn memorial cup after they won the TG4 All-Ireland Intermediate Football Championship.

We set up a fantastic obstacle course in the back field for each class group to take turns taking part in throughout the day.

We also had a few special guests who came to visit and made our experience even better.

Below is a short video that shows just how wonderful an experience this day was.

The children take part in a daily 10@10 on the yard to get their energy flowing and get them ready for a day of learning.

We have two playground breaks during the day that help split up the day and give the children a chance to get some fresh air. After a run around the playground at break and lunch the children come back refreshed and ready to work.

They ‘Exercise to Energise’.

We also have four playground leaders who work together to get the children in both playgrounds to work together and play big group games. We have a number of game explanations printed off and left available to the playground leaders to choose one each day to participate in with the other children in the playgrounds.

We want to make sure everyone in our school is staying active as much as possible, so we carried out the survey below in our school to see what activities the boys and girls in our school are part of.

Look at all the activities the children are taking part in already but just in case there are any boys and girls who would like to be even more active we put together a list of activities that are available nearby and the numbers they need to contact to start taking part in them. It’s important to encourage all of the children to be active.

The whole school took part in Active Every Day for a month before Christmas and the children really enjoyed this and it was very beneficial to the concentration and engagement with further learning for the rest of the day.

After one of the children in the school did very well in a local Irish Dancing Féis we decided to take her aside along with the older classes and ask her to teach them some of her medal winning dance moves. This tied in very well with our whole school’s active focus of dance.
